It still switches on.

Patek Philippe's watches get collected; the equipment that kept them running mostly got scrapped. This is a piece of it: the Multicapt, an electronic timing and testing unit the maison ordered from Neuberger of Munich around 1970 to 1975, carrying both names, and supplied to its own service centre and certified workshops. It was never sold to the public. It lived on a bench.

Its controls are a map of Patek's 1970s. There are settings either side of 36,000 vibrations an hour, because the house was then making its high-beat mechanical calibres, and battery-test buttons at the two voltages of the earliest quartz movements, because it was also making those. A Neuberger multimeter face and a red segmented display handle the readings. One instrument, straddling the exact moment the industry changed.

It is in remarkably clean order for a working tool: the blue anodised fascia unmarked, the silkscreen crisp, the steel case sharp-edged. It powers on, the display lights, and the meter needle sits and answers as it should. It comes with its power cable only; without the original probe the timing function itself goes untested, which is stated plainly.

Patek equipment left the network only when it was replaced, and replacement usually meant the skip. This unit survived, still working, with both names on its face.

The full story of the instrument is told in the rooms below; the condition and the particulars are set out beneath them.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1080/3121/3907/files/patek-philippe-gen-ve-blue-anodised-brushed-aluminium-fascia-with-grey-coated-steel-top-and-sides-curiosity-item-1_9ffd6bd1-9be7-43f6-9de7-986d47269210_Hero.jpg?v=1786237710
