The Étanchéiscope stood on the bench at Rolex service centres and authorised watchmakers, and an Oyster in for service went under its clamp before it went back on a wrist. No bubbles, no leak, no doubt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs an object it is pure mid-century Rolex industry: a cast body in the firm's green hammertone enamel with ROLEX OYSTER PATENT cast in relief at the base, a tall glass column above it, two nickel levers to work the pump, and at the top a white gauge dial signed ROLEX beneath the coronet, graduated in centimetres of mercury. Reference 1000, made in the 1950s or 60s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt still does its job. The pump draws and holds a vacuum, the needle answers and settles back, the levers move freely and the chamber glass is clear, with only a light internal patina low down and honest rub-through at the lever slot to show its working life. Both levers and the knurled specimen clamp are present; there is no box and there are no papers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWatch tools were used up in silence while the watches they passed became famous.
