The firm's mark was a cockerel, and its Jacot tool was sold as the Hahn, the German word for the bird. The Hahn is still made in Switzerland today; this is an earlier example from the Steiner years, before Horia took the company over in 1992.

The frame is brass, 85mm along the base, with two uprights each holding a steel runner locked by a knurled screw at the top. The front of the left upright is stamped C and S in an oval, either side of a small cockerel. Four runners come with the set, each with a split collet end closed by a hex nut and a star-shaped brass collar for grip. Three are graduated runners, marked in hundredths of a millimetre and covering pivots from 0.04 to 0.30mm, from balance staffs up through the train; the fourth, unmarked, is the counter-centre.

On the left upright is the cable drive: a small pulley on a threaded arbor with a return spring along the bed, the drive Steiner offered in place of the fiddle bow. A spare spring is wrapped in paper. Three rounding discs sit in a two-part card tube, and the flat steel pivot gauge has its own place in the insert.

The case is black leatherette, 27.5 by 14cm, the lid gilt with the cockerel, the firm's turns-and-S emblem and the word for precision in German, French and Italian. The red felt insert is cut to fit each part.

Everything works: the runners slide and lock, the collets close, the pulley turns freely and the spring holds its tension. The brass has an even patina with a few small spots by the right upright; the runners are bright. Light wear to the case at the corners.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1080/3121/3907/files/steiner-hahn-jacot-tool-c1960-4_5a96b8cc-32c7-456e-924d-2bc4b0de7010.jpg?v=1791734529
