triple-calendar-italian-discs-red-arrow-date-c-1948
Triple Calendar, Italian Discs, Red Arrow Date, c.1948

A late 1940s Gübelin triple calendar in unpolished steel, with a red arrow pointer date and day and month discs that read in Italian.

The case is 34.7mm across and 43.5mm lug to lug, which puts it at the larger end of what Gübelin cased in steel in the 1940s. The lugs are the point of the design: long, faceted and sharply stepped, with polished top planes falling to brushed flanks, set against a brushed caseband and a polished domed bezel. Because the watch has not been polished, every one of those facets still meets its neighbour at a hard edge. The snap back is plain, with a protective disc still in place over it.

The dial is silvered, with applied gilt Arabic numerals at 12, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 and gilt dots at the hours between. Inside the numerals runs a black minute track; outside them, a blue date track from 1 to 31, read by a long blued pointer hand with a red arrow at its tip. Under the 12 sit two apertures for day and month, and this is where the watch declares its market. The discs are Italian: DOM for domenica, GIU for giugno. Gübelin supplied these calendars with French, English and German discs as a matter of course. Italian discs came only on the watches ordered for Italian clients, and they turn up far less often.

The hands are luminous batons, the radium long since inert and settled into an even tan that matches the gilt of the numerals. The centre seconds is blued steel. The dial itself is clean, without spotting or loss; under the crystal at an angle there are a few fine surface lines near 3 and between 1 and 2, the kind left by a cloth rather than by wear.

Inside is the Valjoux 78, the hand-wound triple calendar from the same 13 ligne family as the 72c chronograph and the 90 with moon phase, here in its purest form: centre seconds, pointer date, day and month, nothing else. The two flat correctors on the left flank at 8 and 10 are the tell, date below, day and month above. It is a calendar that was built to be used daily and set once a month.

It comes on a period steel bracelet with straight end links, unsigned, the kind sold alongside these watches at the time. The crystal shows light surface marks and one longer line across the lower half, which is the sum of the wear on the watch.

The marks, the movement and the condition are set out in the drawers below.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1080/3121/3907/files/gubelin-triple-calendar-steel-pointer-date-1.jpg?v=1792333462
