Art Nouveau Porte-Montre in Patinated Cast Metal, c.1900
An Art Nouveau porte-montre (watch stand) in patinated cast metal. The rounded triangular foot is cast with whiplash leaf lines and small flower sprays and rises into a flared stem, which curls over to carry a dished circular watch cradle. The cradle is framed by whiplash ribbon scrolls with a cluster of blossoms at either side and a pierced crest, where a wire hook set in a small rosette holds the watch by its bow. The surface has an even bronze-brown patina. A Continental Art Nouveau piece.
