'Climax Trip Action' Patent, Retailed by H. Samuel, c.1900
In the closing years of the nineteenth century, Prescot in Lancashire was the beating heart of English watchmaking, and no firm made more of the fact than the Lancashire Watch Company, which advertised itself as the largest manufacturer of English lever watches in the world. This pocket watch is one of theirs: a sterling silver, open-face piece built for H. Samuel of Manchester and sold under their 'Climax' trade name.
The movement carries the 'Trip Action Patent', a genuine mechanical safety feature that disengages the winding train once the mainspring is fully wound, protecting it from the overwinding damage that plagued lesser watches of the era. It is stamped 'Guaranteed English Manufacture Throughout', the trade's own quality mark at a time when cheaper Swiss imports were flooding the market.
The case is hallmarked at Chester - lion passant for sterling, the town's sword-and-wheatsheaves mark, and H. Samuel's own sponsor's mark, H.S - and dates to approximately 1900 to 1906 based on directly comparable examples. At 52.5mm it sits at the larger, more commanding end of the format.
The white enamel dial is in excellent, unmarked condition, signed in period script for 'The Climax Trip Action Patent' and 'H. Samuel, Manchester', with a subsidiary seconds register at six o'clock. The hands are a genuine surprise for a watch at this level: ornate, hand-finished scrollwork with a ball counterweight, a detail rarely mentioned on comparable examples of this model.
The front cover carries an engraved armorial crest, a small mark of a previous owner's pride in the piece. Wound and tested, it winds, sets, and runs correctly and consistently.
This is a watch with a real story: a named English factory at the height of its output, a patented mechanical safeguard, and a level of hand finishing that punches well above its price point.
