A dark-stained carved wooden pocket watch case, hinged at one end and opening to a round well lined in blue velvet.
The lid is carved with a wreath of fern fronds and small five-petal flowers tied with a ribbon bow, on a finely grooved ground, and the sides are cut with vertical flutes. The rim of the well is cut away at the far end for the pendant. The dark stain and deep carving are typical of the carved souvenir work of Brienz and the Black Forest in the late nineteenth century.
Carving
Good. Crisp, with light rubbing to the high points.
Finish
Good. Dark stain worn paler on the fluted edges.
Lining
Good. Blue velvet, with a pale wear mark across the well.
