Room I · The Maker
Lucerne, 1854, a retailer that signed its own watches.
Gübelin was founded in Lucerne in 1854 and by the 1940s was both a retailer of Patek Philippe, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Movado and a maker of watches under its own name, cased to its own designs on Valjoux and other ebauches. Its steel triple calendars and calendar chronographs of this period are among the most recognisable of its own-signed watches. Gübelin did not make the movements, and never claimed to; what it put its name to was the specification, the case and the dial.
Room II · The Dial
Silvered, with applied gilt numerals, a blue date track and two Italian windows under twelve.

The dial is silvered, with applied gilt Arabic numerals at 12, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 and gilt dots at the hours between. Inside the numerals runs a black minute track; outside them, a blue date track from 1 to 31, read by a long blued pointer hand with a red arrow at its tip. Under the 12 sit two apertures for day and month, and this is where the watch declares its market. The discs are Italian: DOM for domenica, GIU for giugno. Italian discs came only on the watches ordered for Italian clients, and they turn up far less often than French or English.

The hands are luminous batons, the radium long since inert and settled into an even tan that matches the gilt of the numerals. The centre seconds is blued steel. The dial is signed E.GÜBELIN beneath the apertures and SWISS at 6, clean and without spotting; under the crystal at an angle there are a few fine surface lines near 3 and between 1 and 2.

Room III · The Case

Faceted lugs, unpolished.

The case is 34.7mm across and 43.5mm lug to lug, at the larger end of what Gübelin cased in steel in the 1940s. The lugs are the point of the design: long, faceted and sharply stepped, with polished top planes falling to brushed flanks, set against a brushed caseband and a polished domed bezel. Because the watch has not been polished, every one of those facets still meets its neighbour at a hard edge. Two flat correctors sit on the left flank at 8 and 10, date below, day and month above, with a fluted steel crown at 3.

The snap back is plain, with a protective disc still in place over it. It comes on a period steel bracelet with straight end links, unsigned.

Signed E. Gübelin, with Italian calendar discs.

The dial is signed E.GÜBELIN beneath the calendar apertures and SWISS at 6. The calendar discs are Italian, DOM for domenica and GIU for giugno, which places the watch in Gübelin's Italian delivery. The movement is the Valjoux 78, identified from the dial layout and the two correctors at 8 and 10 against the calibre's documented arrangement.
