The precious-metal Meisterstück
The two-tone 18K nib and the engraved cap band
Montblanc has made the Meisterstück since 1924, and the 146 is the mid-size piston filler of the range, between the 144 and the 149. The Solitaire was its precious-metal side: the same pens with cap and barrel made in sterling silver, vermeil or solid gold, offered on the 146 in two engraved patterns, Godron and Grain d'Orge. They were made in Hamburg alongside the resin pens and carry the same 18K nib and piston filling system.

Godron flutes, gold trim, a two-tone nib
Godron is Montblanc's name for the fluting: parallel grooves engraved into the sterling silver along the whole cap and the whole barrel, with no break for a cartouche. The metalwork stops at the section, which is black resin, and at the trim, which is gold-plated: clip, clip ring, cap band and the slim ring at the blind cap. The band is engraved MONTBLANC - MEISTERSTÜCK. Silver takes tarnish, and this pen has taken it evenly, dark in the grooves and bright on the ridges, without ever having been polished back.
The nib is the two-tone 18K 4810, gold with a rhodium-plated centre, the star and the carat mark engraved on the face; it is straight, the tines meet and the tipping is whole. The blind cap turns the piston through its full stroke. There is a small smoothed patch beside the clip and one speck on the band; otherwise nothing to report.

The clip ring carries METAL 2, the serial BM103710 and GERMANY. METAL 2 is Montblanc's colour grade for the gold plating, on a scale of 1 to 8. The serial format, two letters and six digits, is the one Montblanc used from about 1992 to 1995: numbering began in late 1990 with digits alone, and seven-digit serials followed in the middle of the decade. GERMANY rather than W.-Germany places it after reunification. The cap band is engraved MONTBLANC - MEISTERSTÜCK; the nib carries the star, 4810, 18K and MONTBLANC 750.
