Steiner of Bôle, under the sign of the cockerel
The lid, gilt with the cockerel and Präzision, Précision, Précisione.
Steiner was the trade name of Thiebaud, a maker of watchmakers' turns, lathes and pivoting tools at Bôle, outside Neuchâtel. Its mark was a cockerel, which gave the Jacot tool its German name, Hahn. Horia SA took Thiebaud over in 1992, and the Hahn pattern is still made in Switzerland. This set comes from the Steiner years, in the black leatherette case that came before today's wooden one.
Room II · The Set
Frame, four runners, cable drive and spares
A Jacot tool holds a staff between a grooved runner and a counter-centre so that its pivot can be spun and burnished to size. The brass frame here is 85mm along the base, with a knurled locking screw on each upright. Three graduated runners, marked in hundredths of a millimetre, cover pivots from 0.04 to 0.30mm, from balance staffs up through the train; the fourth is the counter-centre.
In place of the usual fiddle bow, the left upright carries Steiner's cable drive: a small pulley with a return spring along the bed. The case also holds three rounding discs in a card tube, a steel pivot gauge and a spare spring still in its paper. Everything works: the runners lock, the collets close and the drive turns freely.

The set laid out; fitted in its case; the insert cut to each part.
Room III · The Record
Signed on the frame and on the lid

The case closed.
The front of the left upright is stamped with the Steiner mark, C and S in an oval either side of a cockerel. The same cockerel is gilt on the lid of the case, beside the trilingual Präzision, Précision, Précisione and the firm's emblem of a pair of turns crossed by a hooked S. Every recess in the red felt insert is filled.
The set in its case.
