In the decades before stem-winding became the standard, the finest Swiss makers produced pocket watches of remarkable elegance - and this piece represents that tradition at its most refined.
Dating to approximately 1875-1890, this open-face pocket watch is housed in an 800 Fine Silver case bearing the Swiss crown export control mark. At 34.6mm, it is a compact and finely proportioned piece - the silver case decorated with engine-turned engraving around the bezel edge and a beautifully executed outer case back featuring the Masonic square and compass surrounded by decorative floral motifs. An intimate detail that speaks to the character of the original owner.
The centrepiece is the dial. Rather than the flat, uniform white enamel found on ordinary Swiss production of the period, this watch features a two-tone enamel dial in the Breguet tradition: the Roman numeral chapter ring occupies a distinct circular band, creating visual depth and a quality of finish that sets this apart from standard output of the era. At the centre, delicate scrollwork engraving adds further refinement around the hand post. The enamel is in absolutely perfect condition - no chips, no hairlines, full vibrancy entirely retained after more than a century of existence.
A blued steel minute hand and gilt hour hand complete the picture - simple, correct, and precise. The key-wind, key-set movement winds and sets correctly, and runs with admirable consistency.
