Tilt-Up Walnut Watch Box and Bedside Stand, Green Felt Recess
A solid walnut pocket watch box that converts into a bedside stand. Closed, it is a plain rectangular block of 9 by 7.5 cm, and only the curved seam across the top shows that it opens at all. The thick inner panel pivots up from its bottom edge on two small pins to an easel angle and presents a round recess lined in green felt, 45 mm across, with a slot cut through the top edge for the pendant. The watch hangs bow-up in the recess overnight. Folded flat, the panel's semicircular tongue seats into the matching notch on the fixed front section and the block closes flush, ready for a bag or a drawer.
The construction is walnut throughout: a shallow tray with a lip on three sides and the pivoting panel, with no hinge plate or catch. The top and sides are straight-grained with a streak of pale sapwood at one corner; the underside shows a bolder, wavy figure. The felt is bright and even.
The box carries no maker's mark. The method of construction and the felt place it in the later twentieth century, and it is offered as an unsigned workshop piece of that period rather than a Victorian one.
Condition: the panel pivots smoothly and holds its angle, and it closes flush with the tongue fully seated. No splits, chips or repairs. Felt intact and clean. No odour.
